Fall 2025 - 5 Weeks

Designing a mass-manufacturable, portable light source for the contemporary age

Initial inspiration boards defining my chosen themes of human-led form, curved & natural design, and reconsideration of bygone objects

Ideation sketches, key form motifs and shapes inspired by technological progress and post-modernist aesthetics

Initial low fidelity concept directions via CAD and quick 3D prints. Tall and transitory vs short and stationary. Used as a test for fitting necessary components inside.

Mid fidelity model, moved forward with the taller and transitory form further defining my concept by designing a new top half derived from traditional lamp aesthetics and adding more dynamism to the bottom. Once again this prototype was also used to test the compatibility and usability of internal components, specifically the LED strip I chose to use.

For my high-fidelity model, two major revisions were made to my design. I implemented a capacitive touch sensor on the top to power and dim the light and complimented this feature with an inviting touch pad on the top. The structure of the design was also changed in order to make the light more manufacturable, with the exterior intended to be blow-molded and the interior designed to be injection molded.
